History of Albuquerque International Sunport
Two private airports served Albuquerque initially. The Albuquerque Airport, subsequently renamed Oxnard Field, opened in 1928, while the West Mesa Airport, afterward renamed TWA Airport, opened in 1929.
The earliest airlines to provide service to the airports were Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT), Western Air Express (WAE), and Mid-Continent Air Express. All three of these airlines started providing service in the year 1929.
Initially, the airlines flew out of Albuquerque International Airport. Nonetheless, they relocated to West Mesa Airport during the first year, where they remained for most of the 1930s decade. In 1930, TAT and WAE combined to establish Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA).
Varney Speed Lines took over Mid Continent Air Express' business in 1934. Varney changed its name to Continental Airlines three years later.
It was proposed in 1935 that the city construct a new public airport with Works Progress Administration funds. On February 28, 1937, Governor Clyde Tingley broke ground for the project after securing US$520,500 in funding.
The Albuquerque Municipal Airport opened its doors in 1939 with two asphalt runways, a terminal building built by Ernest Blumenthal in the Pueblo Style, and a massive hangar intended to accommodate TWA's brand-new Boeing 307 Stratoliner.
Within two years of the airport's first operation, construction on the Albuquerque Army Air Base began to the airport's east.
It was converted into what is now known as Kirtland Air Force Base; however, the runways and other facilities at the airport continue to be shared with commercial operations.
Monarch Airlines arrived in Albuquerque in 1947 and combined with other carriers in 1950 to form Frontier Airlines. Pioneer Airlines began operations in 1948 and was acquired by Continental Airlines in 1955.
TWA, the major airline serving Albuquerque, launched the first jet service in 1961 with the Boeing 707. On April 17, 1963, the airport was renamed Albuquerque Sunport.
Late in 1963, Trans-Texas Airways began providing service to the airport, making it one of the first four carriers to do so before the passage of the 1978 airline deregulation legislation.
Over the years, the airport was also served by several smaller commuter airlines, including Ross Aviation.
About Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
The Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area, often known as Tiguex (after the Southern Tiwa), is a metropolitan area in central New Mexico centered on Albuquerque. Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance, and Valencia make up the metro area.
Albuquerque's metro area population was 929,000 as of the 2021 United States Census.
The legend of the Aztecs' Seven Cities of Gold revolved around Albuquerque as its central location. Santa Fe de Nuevo, Mexico's Tiguex Province, got its name from the Tiwa-speaking Puebloans. The latter lived in the region's southernmost pueblos. They shared their home with the Jemez and the Keres people who also lived there.
Since 1620, the area between Bernalillo and Corrales has been planted for sacramental wine, establishing New Mexico's wine legacy. Following this early wine business, other Spanish towns were established, notably Barelas in 1662 and Bernalillo in 1695.
Albuquerque, the central city, was founded in 1706 as La Villa de Alburquerque as the region's trading center. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the United States gained Nuevo México and its Tiguex Province in the nineteenth century.
During the nineteenth century, becoming the New Mexico Territory was a vital feature of the American frontier, as depicted in Western novels. In the subsequent film adaptation, Billy the Kid, Elfego Baca, and Geronimo became iconic figures.
New Mexico became a state in the twentieth century. Since then, trade in the region has increased due to technological, media, and agriculture expansion, fueled by the New Mexico Technology Corridor, media in Albuquerque, and New Mexican food.
